Olin’s Health Education is committed to reducing the harm associated with alcohol and drug use and cultivating an environment in which moderate use is perceived and practiced as the norm. Our prevention efforts reflect a philosophy that students are capable of making wise decisions about their own alcohol and drug use. Our job is to provide the education, support and advocacy necessary to help students do just that.

To that end, we have been involved with a social norms campaign in conjunction with the MSU College of Communication Arts and Sciences designed to help promote a better understanding of alcohol use by our student population in order to challenge myths and misperceptions.

We provide education in classrooms, residence halls, sororities and fraternities by request and have a variety of information available to both on and off-campus students, Resident Mentors, staff and faculty, regarding alcohol and other drugs, including tobacco.

The ATOD specialist on staff is also available as a consultant to parents, concerned friends, mentors and staff/faculty who may have concerns about a student’s use. The ATOD specialist will also provide brief counseling and referral services to students who are concerned about their own use of alcohol and drugs.

The Real Facts – MSU Students and ATOD Use

See NCHA Results here.

A Closer View – Your Personal Alcohol Use

As a basic self-evaluation, students can complete e-CHUG, a short, confidential online survey that provides you with a detailed assessment of your alcohol use. The purpose of this survey is to raise awareness of one’s alcohol use with a primary focus on reducing levels of harmful consequences. Each person will have different results based on their responses, creating a personal and unique assessment each and every time the survey is completed. e-CHUG is free with no limit on how many times the survey can be taken, allowing for students to track their alcohol use over a period of time.

The scope of services related to fitness at Olin centers around the LifeRx program, which is a comprehensive lifestyle and fitness assessment and exercise prescription service. The service is designed to provide students, faculty and staff with a detailed profile of their overall fitness including aerobic capacity, strength, flexibility, body composition, muscle endurance, lung capacity, and cholesterol. The baseline assessment and the individuals' needs and goals are then used to design a personal fitness program. Individual clients may monitor progress with repeat assessments.

Scheduling a LIFE: Rx appointment
  • Call (517) 353-4660 to make an appointment.
  • Call (517) 353-0718 for fees and any questions or concerns regarding the program.
Other Fitness/ Exercise Activities
  • Personal Fitness Awareness
Olin staff associated with LifeRx are available to do "hands-on" presentations for groups, clubs, teams, or academic classes called Personal Fit Awares. Students get a chance to test out some of the equipment used in a fitness assessment. Participants will have the opportunity to test their grip and shoulder strength, their lower back/ hamstring flexibility, blood pressure, lung capacity, and muscle endurance. Handout materials emphasize norms, proper technique, and where to exercise on campus and in the community.
  • Academic Class Presentations
Olin staff are also available to speak in academic classes on a variety of fitness related topics including: cardiovascular fitness and heart disease prevention, enhancing sport performance, marathon training, body sculpting and weight training, managing weight without dieting, and men's health.

Nutrition services at Olin strive to promote students' having a positive relationship with food, eating and how they feel about their body. This is accomplished by being an approachable and reliable resource for students. In addition, by correcting common myths and misconceptions about nutrition, fat, weight and dieting, we hope to decrease the incidence of nutrition related health concerns in the MSU population.

A full-time nutritionist is available for counseling by appointment for MSU students. There is no charge for a visit. To make an appointment with our Registered Dietitian, call (517) 353-4660 or email ronda.bokram@hc.msu.edu.
