Spartan Smart is an alcohol education course designed to meet the needs of students who have received a first offense minor in possession (MIP) charge and/or civil infraction in lieu of an MIP charge. Spartan Smart provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their own drinking behavior in a judgement-free environment.
Spartan Smart is typically divided into two, two-hour sessions. Alternative Saturday courses are offered to students who cannot attend weekday hours; these courses consist of one, four-hour session with no break. The interactive program provides basic education, risk management, and bystander intervention strategies. Sessions are limited to no more than 15 students.
“I liked how the class was informational, open, and honest vs. being condescending and shaming. I enjoyed it!”
“Great class; very helpful and not boring at all – I had a good time while learning important info.”
“It was something I looked forward to after the first class. I learned life lessons.”
“Definitely changed my views about alcohol and drugs.”
“I think this class should be a requirement for all freshman.”
The course fee is $55, payable at the first session by cash, check, or money order. Checks and money orders should be made payable to Michigan State University.

It is important that students contact the Health Promotion Department at least 24 hours in advance to cancel or reschedule a session. Students who miss a session without prior notification will have to re-enroll and pay the course fee again in order to complete the course. Students who arrive later than 15 minutes will be asked to register for another course.
