Counseling & Psychiatry
Depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and academic concerns - these are just some of the issues that affect many MSU students. If you think you may benefit from talking with a counselor, your first step could be to call the MSU Counseling Center to schedule an appointment.
Any student registered for one or more credits is eligible for a consultation - assessment interview. As resources permit, additional services and/or referrals may be provided. Call the Counseling Center to check available times, 517.355.8270; TTY 517.353.7278. The MSU Counseling Center is located in the Student Services building on the second floor.
Psychiatry Services are located at Olin Health Center. Consultation and treatment are provided for a wide range of mental health concerns including: mood and anxiety disorders, eating disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, alcohol/substance abuse, and psychosis. Olin Psychiatry works in collaboration with the MSU Counseling Center and the Olin Primary Care clinic.
Students with mental health concerns who desire consultation/treatment with a psychiatrist should first go to the Counseling Center. The Counseling Center staff will do an initial assessment. If Psychiatric referral is needed, the counselor will evaluate whether Olin Psychiatry or a community resource would be the best fit and make the appropriate referral. Referrals to Psychiatry can also be generated by Olin Primary Care providers.
Psychiatry Clinic hours are Monday through Friday and by appointment only. Appointments can be made with the Psychiatry staff by referral. Referrals are also accepted from a student’s current psychiatrist, counselor or primary care doctor. The first three Psychiatry appointments are prepaid by the University for enrolled MSU students (this does not apply to MSU Law or Lifelong Ed students). After the three covered visits, charges are billed to insurance; this does not guarantee payment for services. Please check your policy for mental health benefits.
Once your appointment is scheduled, please print out and complete the Psychiatry Intake form, then deliver it to the clinic at least two days prior to your first appointment.
To speak with a Psychiatry Clinic staff member, please call 517.353.8737.
Twenty-four hour notice is requested for all cancellations. Following the initial consultation, there is a fee is an appointment is missed without notifying us in advance. Cancellations should be called in to 517.353.8737.
