Contraindications of Massage
Massage is non-invasive, relaxing, and is generally considered safe for most people. However, there are some times when massage is not the best choice, and you may want to wait until you are feeling better. Most conditions can be safely accommodated, but if there is any question, together we can check with your physician for clearance.
Massage should wait if you have any of the following:
- Contagious illness, including cold or flu
- Major surgery in the last 6-8 weeks, or a severe accident or injury in the last week or so
- Skin diseases or widespread, painful sunburn
Check with us if you have any question about whether or not massage, Reiki, or reflexology may be an option for you.
Reiki is a Japanese word for universal life force energy. This form of healing is given by a light touch of hands on or above the body allowing energy to flow through the practitioner to the client. This is to clear the energy centers, bringing balance.
Reiki is given fully clothed while lying on a massage table with relaxing music playing. A gentle placement of hands is done on each of the energy centers or chakras of the client. The practitioner’s hands remain still and focused over each area allowing time for the energy to move through each area. Each session starts at the head, moving slowly down the body, ending at the feet. The session is then ended with a balancing of the body’s energy systems.
- Improved sleep
- Decreased joint pain
- Clarity of thought
- Improves physical energy and alertness
- Lessens headaches
- Deep relaxation
Reflexology is a non-invasive, complementary modality using thumb and finger techniques, applying alternating pressure to reflexes on the bottom of the feet or palm of the hand.
The reflex areas in the feet and hands correspond to all body parts.
Reflexology is given while the client is lying in a comfortable chair. Pressure is then applied to the bottom of the feet or palm of the hands. The pressure is firm but not painful, using the practitioner’s fingers, thumbs, and knuckles. In a full session (45 minutes), both hands and feet are worked on; in a half session, the client chooses one or the other.
- Helps decrease pain
- Improve sleep patterns
- Improves circulation and nerve activity
- Helps balance and normalize the body
- Brings about relaxation and overall well being
