Services for Transgender Students
Options for Transition-Related Care
Our primary care provider team of physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants is trained to provide general medical care for persons of all genders.
We have medical providers who can initiate hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for transgender students or provide ongoing care for students who are already receiving HRT.
For students considering surgery, the closest resource for services is at the University of Michigan Health System Comprehensive Gender Services Program (UMHS-CGSP).
If You Are Interested in Starting HRT
- Before starting hormone replacement therapy (HRT) your medical provider will want you to secure a referral letter from a qualified mental health professional, as required by the Standards of Care (V. 7) of WPATH*. MSU students can contact the MSU Counseling Center (CC). If the CC has no available appointments, they can refer you to a community partner for your referral letter. CC 517-355-8270.
- Once you have the HRT referral letter, call Student Health Services to schedule an appointment. Let the scheduler know you would like an appointment to start HRT. 517.353.4660
*WPATH is World Professional Association for Transgender Health
If You Have Already Started HRT
If you have started hormone replacement therapy, and would like to continue your HRT while at MSU, we have physicians who are able to provide ongoing medication refills to students with a documented treatment plan. We strongly encourage you to continue counseling and specialty care visits with your treating providers while you are getting hormone therapy at school.
Preparing for Your First Visit
For students who have already started HRT, your medical provider at Olin will need a summary of your medical records prior to your initial appointment. This is so they may best help you with your transitional needs.
The medical summary may include:
- diagnostic evaluations from primary care, mental health, and specialty physicians
- medication prescribing information
- treatment and therapy plans.
Our Medical Records staff are available to help guide you if you are unsure how to request your medical summary. You will need to know the names of the medical providers who can provide this information.
You can sign a release in our Medical Records Department to request your records, or records can be faxed directly from your provider to MSU Student Health Services Medical Records.
The Medical Records Department is in Olin Room 147, the phone number is: 517-353-9153, and the fax is: 517-432-9460.
