Women's Health

The staff of the Women’s Health Clinic at Olin Health Center respect and support women in assuming an active role in their health care. To assist in this process, individual staff consultation visits, audiovisual programs, and educational pamphlets are available.
  • General Health Maintenance:
    • GARDASIL - Vaccine for HPV (recommended, not required). Please check with your insurance provider for coverage information.
    • Annual Well Woman Visit - Includes a discussion of health recommendations based on current evidence-based guidelines. The visit is personalized to each patient and may include a physical exam and Pap test depending on age and risk factors.

    • Contraceptive Counseling - Professional advice about the method(s) of contraception to meet individual medical needs and lifestyles.
    • Contraception Visits - Gynecological examination and personalized instruction for contraception. Contraceptive options available by prescription include oral contraceptives (birth control pills), diaphragms, Ortho Evra patch, Depo Provera injection, and NuvaRing. Over-the-counter options include Plan B: Emergency Contraception, foam, and condoms. Additional options include insertion of Paragard, Skyla, and Mirena IUDs (intrauterine device) and Nexplanon. Specific methods of contraceptives may require a referral and not all contraceptives are covered by insurance companies. Please check with your insurance provider for more information.

    • Pregnancy Testing - Low-cost, accurate pregnancy testing. In addition, individual counseling and referral sources are offered in a supportive and confidential manner.
    • For immediate care following sexual assault - Please seek medical care at Sparrow Hospital (or any nearby hospital) within 72 hours. Following immediate care, we provide compassionate follow-up care by personnel with expert training and on-site resources. All medical findings are completely confidential. Additional assistance is available through the MSU Center for Survivors 24-hour crisis line (517) 372-6666 and MSU Safe Place for help with an emotionally, physically, or sexually abusive relationship.
  • Gynecology Problems:
    • Emergency Contraception (Morning After Pill) - Available to prevent pregnancy for women who have had unprotected vaginal sex within the last 72 hours. Plan B is available without a prescription.  ‘Ella’ is available to prevent pregnancy for women who have had unprotected sex within the last 5 days. The patient must speak to a provider to receive a prescription for Ella.
    • General Gynecological Problems -  Diagnostic testing and treatment for problems such as irregular bleeding, heavy periods, menstrual cramps, PMS, abnormal hair growth, painful intercourse, and vaginal infections.
    • Minor Surgical Procedures - Treatment for abnormal Pap smears, evaluation of abnormal genital lesions, Norplant/Implanon removal, and IUD removal.
    • Screening and Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (see the HIV/STI section here) - Including Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, cervical cancer screening for HPV, and HIV infections. All testing, treatment, and counseling are handled in a strictly confidential manner.
  • What costs are involved?
    Fees are charged for the following services: pharmacy, laboratory (including Pap smears), radiology, treatment of genital warts, minor surgical procedures, and some office visits. Students and their spouses/partners are encouraged to secure health insurance coverage.
